Chapter 11

Rachel spent the drive back to the ranch mentally preparing herself for the interrogation to come. It would be so much easier just to tell Marcus about the Medusas and that she was one of them, except the team’s existence was absolutely classified. She would need her boss’s permission to say anything to him about the Medusas. She pondered calling her boss to ask, but it was nearly 2:00 a.m. and he wouldn’t appreciate being woken at this hour. Tomorrow would be soon enough to ask.

Meanwhile, she just had to get through tonight.

A distraction. That was the key. If she could just derail Marcus and his questions for one night, that would buy her the time to talk with Major Torsten.

But what? Like all operators, Marcus was a single-minded kind of guy. Once he had his teeth sunk into a bone, he wasn’t about to let go of it.

They parked in front of his cabin, and she climbed out, pushing her duffel of clothes across the seat to him while she took the heavy weapons bag herself. She’d caught Marcus wincing several times this evening. His shoulder wasn’t anywhere near close to healed.

She followed him into the cabin in silence and set her bag down. And then she braced herself for the onslaught.

Except when it came, it wasn’t what she’d expected. He turned and closed the distance between them until she had to step back. Her shoulder blades touched the back of the door.

He loomed over her in the dark, standing still and silent. He would probably be intimidating as all get-out to a civilian woman if he loomed like that over her. But she’d been loomed over—a lot—by men just like him. Some had been drill instructors yelling at her, some had been hand-to-hand combat instructors about to attack her. Either way, she knew how to handle them. She girded herself for the verbal or physical assault to come, relaxing her knees, balancing her weight evenly on her feet, clearing her mind.

Marcus spoke quietly. Gently, even. “Why don’t you trust me?”

Okay. Not what she’d expected. It took her a moment to shift gear from expecting an attack to answering an insightful question. “I do trust you.”

If only he wasn’t standing so close to her, and if only he didn’t smell like crushed leaves and rain and a hint of pinesap. And if only he wasn’t so good-looking and so smart...and funny and kind and noble...

Oh, who was she kidding? She was ridiculously attracted to him, and her breath was coming in short, fast little gasps that had nothing to do with preparing to be attacked and everything to do with wanting to lean into him, lift her chin and capture his generous mouth in a smoking hot kiss.

“If you trust me, why are you lying to me?” His voice was a low, sexy rumble that made her toes curl inside her shoes. And the note of disappointment in it was her undoing.

A wild impulse to tell him the truth flowed through her.
